The client was purchasing a property where lead contamination was found during a Phase II assessment. The purpose of a Phase II was to identify if contamination was present at the site, but not to determine the full extent of the contamination. A site investigation was necessary to determine how large of an area was impacted and how deep the contamination was. Remediation needed to be performed in one day since the client did not own the property yet and the current business was still operating. Hanis Consulting was up to the challenge.
Hanis Consulting leveraged technology to reduce the time in the field, reduce costs, and to eliminate additional trips to the site. During the site investigation, a handheld analyzer was used to determine the approximate lead concentrations with depth at each boring location. This gave us a high-resolution profile of the soil and allowed us to collect minimal soil samples for laboratory analysis. Now that we had an idea of the extent of lead contamination, the remediation was planned. During the remediation, the analyzer was again used to determine what soil was impacted and needed to be transported off-site.
Our plan minimized the amount of clean soil that was removed with the impacted soil and reduced time and costs. Unnecessary transportation and disposal fees were avoided and backfill to replace the excavated soil was minimized. The remediation was completed without issue and within the tight constraints of the transaction.
